In the southern Appalachian region of North America, the phylogenetically convergent shells of the polygyrid snails Triodopsinae Neohelix major (Binney) and Polygyrinae Mesodon normalis (Pilsbry) are even more convergent in size and shape in sympatry (7 sites) than in allopatry (23 and 10 sites). Environmental correlations account for 34% and 30% of size and shape variations in N. major (larger, taller, and more loosely coiled at northern, high-altitude, sheltered sites), but for only 14% and 9% in M. normalis (larger, flatter, and more loosely coiled at south-facing, exposed sites). The statistical significance of the sympatric convergence dropped out when these correlations were removed. This phenomenon helps account for the many cases in eastern North America of nearly identical land-snail shells in sympatry and questions the importance of competitive character displacement in the evolution of land-snail shell morphology. This apparently nonmimetic case of sympatric convergence provides an unusually precise and well-delimited, naturally replicated experiment in evolutionary morphology, which is analyzed for controlling factors in a follow-up paper. 相似文献

The foliage development ofDryopteris crassirhizoma Nakai was quantitatively estimated by measurements of shape and size of leaves from different developmental stages of sporophytes,
to lead to an understanding of the life history characteristics of the species. The number of midrib branches (NV, number
of veins) of the leaf corresponds to the leaf-shape complexity (DI, dissection index; shape complexity from a circle) and
length of leafblade (BL). Some quantitative characters, such as leaf uniformity (decrease in NV variation), changes in shape
and increase in number of leaves, vary progressively during foliage formation. The sequence of foliage development can be
quantified using the parameter NV: for example, 15-NV for leaf uniformity, 30-NV for leaf-shape change from triangular to
oblanceolate, 60-NV for increase in leaf number and leaf fertility in the course of sporophyte ontogeny.

Morphological variation of trichomes, heterocytes and akinetes in four species classified into the nostocalean genera Aphanizomenon Morren ex Bornet et Flahault or Anabaena Bory (Cyanophyta/Cyanobacteria) was studied from natural samples by LM and illustrated by drawings and micrographs. All investigated species, Aphanizomenon gracile (Lemmerm.) Lemmerm., A. aphanizomenoides (Forti) Komárek et Horecká, Anabaena bergii Ostenfeld, A. minderi Huber-Pestalozzi, occur in the plankton as solitary trichomes, similar to many representatives of the genus Anabaena. The geometry of the external shell sculpture in the Late Cretaceous inoceramid bivalve Inoceramus hobetsensis Nagao & Matsumoto, 1939 was studied both empirically and theoretically. A large sample, collected from the Upper Cretaceous of Hokkaido, Japan, shows remarkably high intraspecific variation in the shell sculptural pattern. Quasi-commarginal ribs, slightly oblique to the external growth increments, occur in some specimens. These sculptures are commonly irregular in strength and spacing, and their features are successfully modelled by computer simulations when the commarginal ribs are superposed with nearly concentric divaricate rib. Computer models indicate that the divergent sculpture element, often found in other inoceramids, was present throughout the evolution of I. hobetsensis and was developing in the evolutionary lineage from I. hobetsensis nonsulcatus to I. hobetsensis hobetsensis, although it was only weakly expressed. The results also suggest that some apparently distinct sculptural patterns of I. hobetsensis are the result of minor changes in the morphogenetic program. 相似文献

To investigate the phylogenetic and phylogeographical relationships of arvicolines, we use several Western European ground voles. More particularly, our study is focused on Microtus ( Terricola ) savii and M. ( T. ) pyrenaicus . These two allopatric species are usually considered as having originated from the same ancestor, possibly M . ( T. ) mariaclaudiae . We propose molecular and morphological approaches: nucleotidic data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b and 12S rRNA genes and global morphological analyses from the first lower molar. Four other Terricola species ( multiplex , lusitanicus , duodecimcostatus , subterraneus ) were added to the data set for both analyses, and two other vole species ( Clethrionomys glareolus and Chionomys nivalis ) as outgroup to the molecular analysis, and five fossil populations to the morphological one. Palaeontological data are also widely taken into account. Both molecular and morphological analyses indicate that intra- Terricola relationships reflect the present-day geographical distribution of our data set species. Our results show that M. ( T. ) savii and M. ( T. ) pyrenaicus are from separate speciation events leading to two different biogeographical groups, respectively the Alpine–Italian group and the French–Iberian group, the latter being much more homogeneous. These speciation events could be related to Quaternary climatic changes, which induced southward migration, leading first to M. ( T. ) savii and second to M. ( T. ) pyrenaicus . The classical hypothesis of a geographical speciation for these two taxa from M. ( T. ) mariaclaudiae is invalid. However, the morphological data suggest a potential phylogenetic relationship between M. ( T. ) mariaclaudiae (ancestor) and M. Apical and basolateral membrane domains of epithelial cell plasma membranes possess unique lipid compositions. The tight junction, the structure separating the two domains, forms a diffusion barrier for membrane components and thereby prevents intermixing of the two sets of lipids. The barrier apparently resides in the outer, exoplasmic leaflet of the plasma membrane bilayer. First data are now available on the generation of these differences in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, grown on filter supports. Experiments in which fluorescent precursors of apical lipids were introduced into the cell have demonstrated that upon biosynthesis apical lipids are sorted from basolateral lipids in an intracellular compartment. In this paper we present a model for the sorting process, the central point of which is that the two sets of lipids laterally segregate into microdomains that bud to form vesicles delivering the lipids to the apical and the basolateral plasma membrane domains, respectively. 相似文献

We studied patterns of call acoustics and external morphological differentiation in populations of the dart-poison frog Allobates femoralis occurring in forested areas along a 250-km stretch of the upper Madeira River, Brazil. Multivariate analyses of variance using principal components representing shared acoustic and morphological parameters distinguished three groups in relation to call structure and external morphology: (1) populations belonging to a two-note call morphotype; (2) populations with four-note calls inhabiting the left riverbank; and (3) populations with four-note calls inhabiting the right riverbank. Our results report a case of Amazonian anuran diversity hidden by current taxonomy and provide evidence for the upper Madeira River being a boundary between distinct populations of A. femoralis , and suggest a new taxonomic interpretation for these groups. Samples that did not fit into the general differentiation pattern and the existence of a well-defined contact zone between two morphotypes on the left riverbank indicate that mechanisms complementary to river-barrier hypotheses are necessary to explain the phenotypic differentiation between populations. Our study shows that at least one anuran species shows congruence between population differentiation and separation by a large Amazonian river, as documented for birds and mammals. Conservation efforts should not consider the taxon now known as A. femoralis as a homogeneous entity. There is much within-taxon variability, which can be probably explained partly by the existence of cryptic species, partly by geological barriers and part of which currently has no obvious explanation. 相似文献

Three local populations from Northeast Iceland are surveyed for the occurrence of the deflecting wrinkle of the metaconid on second deciduous and first permanent lower molars. The trait occurs more frequently on dm2 than on M1, and no sexual dimorphism is found, as expected. However, the frequencies are clearly within those predicted by the Mongoloid dental complex for Mongoloid populations. It is therefore suggested that the inclusion of the deflecting wrinkle in the Mongoloid dental complex be re-evaluated, and the racial diagnostic value of the trait taken with reservation. 相似文献

Many investigators categorize individuals from hybrid zones to facilitate comparisons among genotypic classes (e.g., parental, F1, backcross) for comparative studies in which components of fitness or geographic variation are being analyzed. Frequently, multiple character sets representing genetically independent traits are used to classify these individuals and various methodologies are employed to combine the classifications obtained from the different character sets. We adapted the principles of total evidence and taxonomic congruence (two formalized approaches used by systematists in formulating phylogenetic hypotheses) to address the problem of discriminating hybridizing species and classifying individuals from hybrid zones. As our model, we used two morphological (coloration and morphometric) and two molecular (allozyme and mitochondrial DNA restriction-fragment-length polymorphism) character sets that differentiate two stone crab species (Menippe adina and M. mercenaria). Using principal-components analysis, we determined that combining character sets and eliminating characters or character sets that did not have large eigenvector coefficients for the principal component that best separated the two species yielded the highest level of discrimination between species and allowed us to classify a broad range of morpho-genotypes as hybrids. For the stone crabs, three diagnostic allozyme loci and five diagnostic coloration characters best separated the species. The two character sets were not completely congruent, but they agreed in their classification of 50% of the individuals from the hybrid zone and rarely strongly disagreed in their classifications. Classification discrepancies between the two character sets probably represent variation between traits in interspecific gene flow rather than intraspecific, ecologically mediated variation. Our results support the assertions of previous investigators who espoused the benefits associated with using multiple character sets to classify individuals from hybrid zones and demonstrate that, if character sets are reasonably congruent and numerically balanced, combining diagnostic characters from multiple character sets (a total-evidence approach) can enhance discriminatory power between species and facilitate the assignment of hybrid-zone individuals to genotypic classes. On the contrary, classifying hybrid-zone individuals using character sets separately (a taxonomic-congruence approach) provides the opportunity to compare levels of introgression between species and to assess reasons for discordance among the data sets. 相似文献

Summary Retinoids and growth factors seem to be important for normal mammalian reproduction and development. High levels of retinoic
acid are teratogenic and induce cleft palate in the mouse. Little is known concerning the mechanisms through which retinoids
induce cleft palate. Palatal epithelia from CD-1 embryonic mice on Day 12 of gestation were isolated from the mesenchyme and
cultured in serum-free media, with all-trans retinoic acid or 13-cis retinoic acid, with or without epidermal growth factor
(EGF). The epithelia attached and grew, and the cells differentiated over a 72-h culture period. Binding of [125I]EGF was observed in all cultures in a pattern that correlated with thymidine (TdR) uptake by the epithelia. EGF enhanced
growth and [3H]TdR incorporation of the oral cells, but nasal cells generally did not proliferate. In this culture system, both retinoids
suppressed [3H]TdR incorporation in a concentration-dependent manner for epithelia cultured with or without EGF. Medial cells are important
to normal palatogenesis as they play a role in fusion of opposing shelves and subsequently many of these cells undergo programmed
cell death. Death of medial cells in vitro is prevented by EGF and by the retinoids, either with or without EGF. This response
occurs in the absence of a mesenchymal interaction, suggesting that the medial cell response to EGF and retinoids is not mediated
by or dependent on the mesenchymal tissues. The survival of medial cells may be responsible for the failure of opposing shelves
